Living in Llumeneres, the village with the lowest population in Andorra

Llumeneres is the smallest town in the Principality of Andorra. Currently, according to the data collected by the end of 2017 by the National Department of Statistics, there is a population of only 3 inhabitants. A figure that already shows the tranquility of this village.

Located northwest of the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria, at an altitude of 1820 meters, it is accessed by the Nagol road and, almost arriving in the neighboring vilage of Certers and taking the detour towards Llumeneres.

The serpentine road, very frequented by cycling lovers, goes up for about 5 km along the slope of the mountain, leaving on the right side the Llumeneres river. The slope of this mountain is faced towards the south, which provides many hours of sun and a temperate climate that brings to the area a very pleasant style and quality of life.

Llumeneres is well-known for the agricultural and livestock exploitation that, as of the 60's, the owners turned into what it is nowadays: an autonomous exploitation of tobacco and livestock. A family tradition that has made this small village a reference in Andorra to promote, through school visits, the agricultural and livestock culture.

Peculiarly, it was in this remote place where, at the beginning of the eleventh century, the bishop of Urgell and co-prince of Andorra, the bishop of Sant Ermengol, went to live when he was older in oerder to rest. Such is the historical importance of this ecclesiastical figure, that conquered southern territories (then in Muslim hands) and promoted large public communication works, that since 1957 has a theatrical show at La Seu d'Urgell that represents hi life in 10 scenes, one of which relates his stay in the village of Llumeneres. The work The Altarpiece of Saint Ermengol has more than 50 representations in the cloister of La Seu d'Urgell Cathedral.

Another remarkable aspect that defines the natural surroundings of Llumeneres is the peculiar day of the pasture change that different graziers realize every year. During this day, farmers take more than 2000 sheep from the Cubil (parish of La Massana) to the Llumeneres meadows. A curious parade through the centre of Sant Julià de Lòria that produces, as it passes, images and bucolic scenes that attract the attention of those who are on the street.
