Andorra 2027: 40 million to bring the first Ski World Cups

The Principality of Andorra has officially presented its candidacy to host what would be its first Ski World Championships in 2027, a project to which it plans to allocate 40 million euros of budget in a proposal that combines sustainability, accessibility, culture, leisure and sport. This has been set by the International Ski Federation (FIS), which will choose the winning venue on May 26, 2022 in Vilamoura (Algarve, Portugal).
This budget responds to the income from sponsorship and audiovisual rights, which the FIS will commercialize and transfer to the organizing committee the part that corresponds to operating expenses. In this way, no public contributions will be necessary to cover the cost of organizing the appointment. This has been stated by the CEO of Grandvalira and general director of the Andorra 2027 candidacy, David Hidalgo.
Numbers
The organization estimates a similar return on investment made thanks to marketing and television rights. On the other hand, it is expected that more than 750 skiers from 70 countries will participate, and that the event will be covered in turn by about 1,000 journalists and communication professionals. Numbers from previous tournaments point to around 4,000 viewers on weekdays and 10,000 on weekends.
Competing candidacies
The candidacy of Grandvalira, in Andorra, competes with two expert candidacies, Crans Montana (Switzerland) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Bavaria, Germany), and with another novice candidacy, in Narvik (Norway). The aim is to once again position Andorra as a benchmark in the snow tourism sector with a 360º commitment from sports to sustainability, including leisure, culture and gastronomy.
The Ski World Cups have been held since 1931, although in 1982 the Federation decided to organize them every two odd years so as not to make them coincide with the Olympic Games. In 2027 the 49th edition will be organized, to which Grandvalira aspires with a solid commitment.
